The correlation between junior high school students’ cognitive strategy and their reading comprehension / Afif Azmi Laili Rachmah

Abstrak
Reading is one of four learning language skills. It has an important role for somebody who is learning new languages such as English. In order to master reading the readers need good strategies like cognitive strategy. It is an internal thinking process dealing with the way the learners learn understand and overcome the problem. Based on those variables the researcher aims to investigate the correlation between the cognitive strategy and reading comprehension. This research used a correlation research design. The population was 264 ninth graders of SMPN 15 Malang. This research used stratified proportional random sampling. The samples were 30 students from all categories high achievers mid achievers and low achievers. To collect the data the researcher used two instruments a reading comprehension test and a cognitive strategy questionnaire. The findings showed that there is no correlation between the cognitive strategy used and the reading comprehension scores. The computed value of the significant level is .482 which means that the null hypothesis is not rejected. The researcher then investigated why there is no correlation between both variables. It is mainly because the researcher did not do the sampling by herself so that she did not have control to the sampling process. It is assumed that the school party chose only high achievers in each category. Next the reading comprehension test lacked difficult questions. Also the number of subjects should be bigger than 30 students. To conclude cognitive strategy and reading comprehension have no correlation. This means that the higher the cognitive strategy of the students does not mean the better their reading comprehension. English teachers are suggested to provide some practices in order to improve the students reading comprehension. And for future researchers who are willing to conduct similar studies they are suggested to conduct research in a larger sample to do the sampling by themselves to prepare better reading comprehension test in terms of quality and number of questions and to use other instruments such as an interview.
