Elt students\' perception toward the use of role-play in learning english speaking skill / Bagoes Yoega Soendoro

Abstrak
The research was conducted based on the preliminary study result that showed the ELT students in the 2018 cohort of Universitas Negeri Malang experience being taught by role-playing technique during their speaking courses. The researcher considered the case interesting because the case is not often encountered in the college degree. Based on the researcher s observation there are also several studies regarding the effectiveness and advantages of the role-playing technique for the teaching-learning process of speaking skills. However few studies were found about how ELT students perceive this argument and the factors influencing their perception. Therefore the researcher seeks to answer these problems (1) 1. How do the ELT students perceive the use of role-play technique in learning English speaking skills (2) What factors influence the ELT students perception of role-play technique for learning English speaking skills This study used a survey research design with a mixed research method. The instruments for the data collection are in the form of 19 items of a close-ended questionnaire 1 item of an open-ended questionnaire and an interview. The result showed that the ELT students have a good perception toward the use of role-play technique in learning English speaking skills due to several factor points such as (1) Role-play function in enhancing students interest and experience in speaking skill mastery (2) Role-play function in providing a perfect challenging learning environment for learning speaking skill and (3) Role-play function as the facilitator of the students speaking mastery.
