Hybrid identity: sharing thoughts in colonialism era through indonesian newspapers / Afwa Zakia Al Azkaf

Abstrak
Some factors have influenced the way Indonesian people use other languages in their writings such as colonialism migration and globalization. During the colonial period Indonesian intellectuals mostly wrote in Dutch aside from English and other regional languages. Speakers of more than one language embrace a hybrid identity as they move from one language to another. The paper aims to see closer at Indonesian rsquo s writings in the colonialism era how a multilingual writer self-identified himself when sharing thoughts through newspaper columns and how colonialism had influenced the writer rsquo s self-identification. Using qualitative analysis of textual data taken from Indonesian newspapers published in the 1930s and 1970s I show that the multilingual writer recognized his self-identity as a hybrid as he was able to use a different language in different situations. A hybrid identity (Lo 2002) was shown by the multilingual writer when he made a meaning making system shaped experience and gained understanding or knowledge (Baker 2011) using various languages in his repertoire. The situation around him had motivated him to cling into one identity that he felt most loyal to.
