Pre-service english teachers’ perceptions towards grammar translation method for teaching English in secondary school / Rosa Dianovita Sari
Abstrak
Grammar Translation Method (GTM) is a classical method that is considered to be appropriate and effective for teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) in Indonesia because it makes students understand the lessons better which lead the students to have better learning outcomes. This mixed-method study aimed to investigate how PET2017 from Universitas Negeri Malang perceived GTM for teaching English as a foreign language to secondary school students during their internship. To enrich this study the researcher also explored PET2017s opinions about students attitudes toward GTM and how effective is the method to assist secondary school students in EFL learning. This study discovered that the majority of the PET2017 believed that the GTM was considered useful in helping PET2017 in improving students English skills. This is also supported by the positive response of students since they feel more comfortable while learning. Even so GTM has a shortcoming in terms of student-teacher interactions thus this study recommends that PET2017 combine GTM and with other current methods to make the learning process more effective and in line with the Curriculum 2013 regulations.
