Developing interactive supplementary reading materials for the tenth-grade nursing department students of SMKN 2 Malang / Rania Nur Abdilla

Abstrak
Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK) is vocational high schools that aim to provide the students with technical skills needed in a particular job. The overall content of this study program focuses on developing students abilities and skills in a certain subject. In line with the general purpose of SMK in learning English SMK students need English for Specific Purposes (ESP) so that they can learn English that is suitable to the main field they take. Meanwhile In SMKN 2 Malang the materials used are mostly in the area of General English that do not cater the students needs of ESP. Thus with the purpose of fulfilling the ESP needs of tenth-grade nursing department students of a vocational high school in Malang this study attempted to develop supplementary reading materials that are suitable to be used in the nursing field. A simplified adaptation of research and development procedures by Borg and Gall (2003) is used in this study. The procedures are (1) need analysis (2) product development (3) expert validation (4) first revision (5) product try out (6) second revision. Here the researcher compressed the 3 steps of field testing from Borg and Gall (2003) into one product try out and added the expert validations before the product try out process to ensure the quality of the product. The materials were developed based on the result of the need analysis and the contents were based on the English and vocational nursing competencies of 10th-grade Nursing Department Students in Curriculum 2013. In the developing process this study involved an English teacher an instructional materials expert and tenth-grade nursing department students. The product of this study is an interactive module that can be used independently by 10th-grade nursing department students. After trying out the product the majority of tenth-grade nursing students in SMKN 2 Malang agreed that the module was suitable to be used by tenth graders in the nursing field. The students also mentioned that the module was easy to use fun interesting and useful to help them learn English especially in learning reading.
