Space lexicalization in english language education students\' narrative writing / Naima Khairunisa

Khairunisa, Naima - Nama Orang;

Abstrak
English and Indonesian language differ in terms of conveying space. Indonesian language belongs to verb-framed languages in which it uses main verbs to express motion events. Meanwhile English is satellite-framed languages in which it expresses motion events through spatial words prepositions adverbial particles or phrasal verbs. Because of these differences many non-native English speakers including Indonesian English Language Education (ELE) students do not feel comfortable in using spatial words. However it is prominent to acquire spatial words because ELE students are expected to be English teachers. Therefore the knowledge of spatial words might help them in teaching these items. Besides they can use English to communicate effectively and prevent misunderstanding. A convergent parallel mixed-method research design was utilized to achieve the aim of the study. The subjects of this study were 15 Master rsquo s degree students in English Language Education Universitas Negeri Malang. As the instruments the researcher used a test to investigate the subjects rsquo understanding of space lexicalization and a narrative written composition to know how they apply spatial words.The researcher distributed the test which consists of 20 multiple-choice items and five translation tasks. Each translation task contained motion events that should be translated from Indonesian language to English. The result of the test will divide the subjects into five categories of knowledge. There are very good (score 85-100) good (70-84) fair (55-69) poor (40-54) and very poor (0-39). Next the researcher collected the students rsquo narrative paragraphs. The finding showed the subjects understand the concept of space lexicalization. From the five classifications of categories the subjects are classified into three categories 26.67% of subjects have very good knowledge ten students (66.66%) belong to good category and only one student (6.67%) is in the fair category. None of the students are categorized as the lowest category. In terms of applying space lexicalization in narrative writing they produced less space lexicalization than the narrative writing model did. However the difference is not too distant so I consider the students have acquired space lexicalization well in narrative writing. In addition there is no slight difference between the three categories in applying space lexicalization in narrative writing. It means that they can encode space lexicalization in narrative writing although some of them might have little idea about the theories. The findings of this study suggest English teachers to provide more materials and activities related to the use of prepositions adverbial particles and phrasal verbs. Further the teaching and learning of different lexicalization patterns across languages should be concerned so that the students can understand how a language works in the realm of space lexicalization. Then a further study should be conducted with a larger number of subjects. Future researchers can provide different discourse contexts to investigate how the subjects apply space lexicalization in a writing.
