Efl teachers\' problems and solutions in teaching english to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities / Revita Putri Utami

Abstrak
Sekolah Luar Biasa (SLB) is a school specialized for students with disability including citizen with special gifts and talents. This is one of the realization of government rsquo s program where everyone has the right to study. In order to give the best education for students with special needs qualified teachers are needed. In the previous studies it is found that foreign language teachers that teach students with special needs tend to have difficulties in teaching. Many of the studies were talking about the difficulties in teaching deaf and hard-of-hearing students yet not many were about Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IDD) especially in Indonesia. Therefore this study covers about the problems and solutions in teaching English to students with IDD. This research is a descriptive qualitative study which aimed to identify the problems as well as the solutions done by English teachers in teaching students with IDD. The data were obtained through observation field note and also interview to five teachers in SLB Pembina Tingkat Nasional Bagian C Malang. Three of the teachers are junior high school teachers while the other two are senior high school teachers. The observation and the field note taking were done for 3 weeks while the interview was done for 6 weeks including the preliminary study. The analysis was done by transcribing categorizing and synthesizing the problems and solutions. The findings show that 1) The teachers problems related to the English proficiency of the teacher methods and media used and also the low ability of the students in understanding the lesson. 2) The teachers used YouTube English learning application drill and repetition and peer tutor as several ways in handling the problems they faced. In conclusion almost every problem was similar yet the solutions done by the teacher were different depending on the situation of each class. EFL teachers should try out different methods and media that are most suitable for the students. It is essential for further researchers to explore more about this topic especially in order to help EFL teachers finding better methods and media to use.
