A structural-formal analysis of the main character’s motivation in pursuing transgender identity through the danis girl movie / Yucha Pratama

Abstrak
The aim of this study is to analyze the main character rsquo s motive behind the transgender identity reflected in The Danish Girl (2015). This study applied qualitative research method as the analysis is presented in the form of descriptive text and pictures. In order to guide this study the approach of structural-formal analysis is used. The analysis shows the representation of masculine gender identity that is maintained by Einar who is biologically male. However the desire to cross the boundary of being a man that has been repressed leads him into a state of gender distress. This study focuses on examining the masculine gender identity that Einar is forced to live with and his transition into a transgender to pursue his desired gender. The result shows that Einar maintained his masculine gender identity through his appearance and heterosexual coherence that he practiced within the society. Moreover another result shows how Einar rsquo s biological sex does not fit his desired gender identity as a woman. The evidences are shown through his great attraction towards women rsquo s attributes the resentment to his male vital organ and the state of gender dysphoria that eventually led him to undergo a sex reassignment surgery to fully become a woman
