In the teaching and learning process textbooks play a role as learning sources to fulfill course s objectives as well as a source of information and knowledge regarding various aspects in life. However there are many aspects in textbooks that need to be improved. One aspect in textbooks that still often needs improvement is regarding gender equality. Choosing a textbook that is free of bias and sexism is important to avoid giving bad influence on students way of thinking about gender role and status in society. The aim of this study is to analyze and describe sexism which exists in the textbook entitled Bright An English Course for Junior High School Students for 7th Graders. This study is included as descriptive qualitative which used content analysis as the method. The data was collected through in-depth observation to all the 12 units of the textbook. In observing the data two sets of criteria were used. The first set of criteria was used to analyze the text contents of the textbook while the second criteria was used to analyze the image contents. The criteria used to analyze Texts are (1) first-ness (2) sexist language (3) subject pronoun which collocates with verb (4) possessive pronoun which collocates with noun and (5) noun which collocates with adjective. Meanwhile the criteria used to analyze Images are (1) visibility (2) active and passive characters (3) characters activities (4) characters occupations and (5) characters clothing. The findings of the study showed that there is sexism in both text and image contents of the textbook. In the textbook sexism is implied through the total percentages of occurrence and the associated meanings of each criteria. The gap of percentage between female and male in both sets of criteria is mostly more than 5% with male s percentages outnumbered female s. The only criteria with the gap less than 5% is subject pronoun which collocates with verb which included as one of the criteria of Texts with the gap approximately by 4%. The gap for the other Texts criteria is first-ness with 37.14% sexist language with 50% possessive pronoun which collocates with noun by 13.4% and noun which collocates with adjective by 16%. Meanwhile the gap for the criteria of Images are all more than 5%. The gap of the criteria visibility is 13.7% active and passive characters is 16.6% characters activities is 24.32% characters occupations is 12% and characters clothing is by 14%. Based on the findings and the discussions of the study it is suggested that English textbook writers pay more attention in the representation of female and male in the text and image contents of the textbook. As for English teachers it is suggested to be more aware about sexism and do scanning and skimming on the contents of the textbook before they use it in the learning and teaching process.
