Errors of localization in the english translation of yojo senki novel / Iffan An Nizar

Nizar, Iffan An - Nama Orang;

Abstrak
The challenge to translate a novel is not only dealing with languages but also the different cultures as reflected in the plot and the setting. The cultures are commonly influenced by the localities. As the result translating a novel basically is transferring the source cultures into the targeted cultures. These differences cause a problem. The problem refers to the adaptation or the localization in the translation process. The current study is intended to investigate the errors of localization in the English translation of Y jo Senki novel. The investigation will reveal how errors in adaptation or localization occurs in the translation of Japanese Y jo Senki novel into English. The objective of the current study is to reveal the types of localization errors occurred in the English translation of Y jo Senki Novel and to what extent the localization errors in English translation affects the intended meaning. The current study employs the qualitative research approach particularly the descriptive qualitative method since the objective of the study is to subjectively describe the localization errors occurred in the English version of Y jo Senki novel in which the original novel is written in Japanese language. The language data in this study refers to the translation errors made by the translator of the Y jo Senki novel. The data are achieved by comparing the original version of the Y jo Senki novel in Japanese language and the translation version of the novel in English language. The primary source of data of the current study are two. The first is the original novel written in Japanese language entitled Y jo Senki. The second is the English version novel translated by Emily Balistrieri and Kevin Steinbach. The finding of the study shows that there are three types of localization errors. The localization errors encompass the ambiguity the cultural differences and inequivalent term. An ambiguity error occurs when either the source or target text segment allows for more than one semantic interpretation. This error happens caused by how ambiguous the Japanese language itself. The major cause for this Japanese language does not require explicit grammatical subject marker. The cultural differences take place since the novel translation constitutes the bridge between the source and the targeted cultures and the bridge between the Japanese writer and the English readers. Inequivalent terms occur when there is no closely related terms between the Japanese and the English expression. Therefore the translator prefers using the more generic term to replace the specific term in questions.
