The comparison of illocutionary acts between boys\' and girls\' speeches in tedxyouth@okc 2019 / Devi Puspitasari

Abstrak
Abstract This research aims to compare the illocutionary acts performed by boys rsquo and girls rsquo speeches in TEDxYouth OKC 2019. There are two research questions to investigate this matter that are what kind of illocutionary acts were performed by both genders along with the similarities and differences that they shared. The differences between boys rsquo and girls rsquo speeches will be focusing on the use of intensifiers as one of the women rsquo s languages proposed by Lakoff (1975). Also a descriptive qualitative method was applied in this study. Further the research rsquo s data source was obtained from the videos of TEDxYouth OKC 2019 through TEDx Talks YouTube channel. There are 17 videos to be analyzed that cover six girls and eleven boys. The results show that either boys or girls performed the same four types of illocutionary acts that are representatives directives expressives and commissives. Regarding the comparison of differences that both genders shared this study found out that the boy speakers used more intensifiers than the girls. Moreover the similarities among both genders can be seen from the fact that they tend to use amplifiers type of intensifiers in their speeches. Keywords Illocutionary Acts Speech Gender.
