Modal auxiliary verbs in indonesian efl students’ academic writing: a corpus-based study / Afifah Ainiyah

Abstrak
In academic writing modality has an essential position in a sentence because it shows the writer rsquo s attitude and meaning that the writer expresses on a sentence. This study aims at comparing the frequency and the use of modal verbs based on its semantic between Indonesian EFL students taken from Corpus of State University of Malang Indonesian Learners English (C-SMILE) and native writers taken from Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) in academic writing context. The modal auxiliary verbs that are analyzed in this study focuses on nine core modal verbs namely can could may might shall should will would and must. The C-SMILE data consist of undergraduate students rsquo theses of English Department while for international corpus focuses on humanities in academic section. This study used quantitative and qualitative approaches to analyze the data. It was found that modal verbs can could will should are the top four frequently used in C-SMILE. In COCA the order of modal verbs frequency is can would will could should might must and shall. There is similarity in the way non-native writers in C-SMILE and native writers in COCA use modal auxiliary verbs like can and could which are used to refer to ability. This study is expected to help teachers in setting strategies in teaching and boost English learners to use modal auxiliary verbs according to the English context.
