Objectifying women through hashtag fuckwomen / Alfina Ratri Pradini
Abstrak
This study focuses on investigating how men rsquo s language discriminate and objectify women. The data is taken from the twitter updates by male twitter users filtered through the hashtag FuckWomen. The descriptive qualitative method and formal object such as tabular is applied in this study. Moreover the guiding theory of men rsquo s language by Coates (2013) which derived from men rsquo s speech theory of Lakoff (1975) is used to analyze the linguistic features of male twitter users on their twitter updates related to women. The perception of women rsquo s discrimination and objectification is also included in this study. The result shows the linguistic features used by men are swearing and taboo words slang command and directive hedges question and strong assertion. The certain impressions of straight-forwardness direct commands strong assertion and swearing are particularly implemented in men rsquo s language features in order to maintain their dominant image which reflected their real-life gender role in society that differs with women. The other result shows discrimination towards women that is presented through the language use of men includes positioning women as inferior to men pressuring and sustaining the idea that women are not supposed to have a strong personality incapable of doing instrumental work weak made for the domestic role and valued solely for their sexual function. Women are also objectified through language that is included within the data is in the form of derogatory terms and the idea of women as the object of sexual satisfaction for men.
