Good english teachers as perceived by secondary school students in Indonesia / Giar Sidhatanu
Abstrak
This survey study aims at finding out the secondary school students rsquo perception towards the characteristics of good English teachers based upon the standard of four teacher competencies i.e. pedagogical personality social and professional competencies. The researcher collected data by using students rsquo questionnaires asking students rsquo opinions about the characteristics of good English teachers. The findings show the highest score went to pedagogical competence which includes knowledge on teaching methods mastery of learning principles recognizing students rsquo characteristics knowledge on learning assessments utilizing information and communication technology understanding learning evaluation and knowledge on classroom management. Secondly in personality the highest competence was being noble followed by being a good role model responsible wise serious in applying work principles being self-confident respectful in placing the teacher rsquo s position as a noble dignified profession and being assertive. Then in social competence the highest score was not discriminating others followed by treating students proportionally and fairly being polite knowing how to communicate orally and write effectively and having a good attitude with students. Lastly in professional competence the highest score went to mastering standard and basic competencies followed by developing learning materials creatively developing professionalism sustainably mastering teaching materials taking advantage of information and communication technology and providing feedback to students.
