Demotivation in home online english learning amid the pandemic of covid-19 / Azza Nabila

Nabila, Azza - Nama Orang;

Abstrak
In the context of English language learning demotivation is considered as detrimental factors to learners rsquo motivation because it diminishes students rsquo motivation. Although recognizing students rsquo demotivators is as important as motivating factors in language learning not many studies are done in this area especially in Indonesian teaching and learning context. More specifically there are lack of studies investigating demotivators in online English learning as response of social distancing order amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus this current research aims to fill the research gap and to determine the students rsquo level of demotivation. This descriptive research employed two kinds of data quantitative and qualitative. Twenty-seven-item questionnaire adapted from Sakai and Kikuchi (2009) and Farrah and Al-Bakry (2020) was the main instrument to obtain data about learners rsquo level of demotivation and demotivation factors as well as to identify the frequency of each demotivator. An open-ended question was also attached at the end of the questionnaire to dig other additional demotivators. This study involved 198 undergraduate students and five of them were chosen for interview as for gaining qualitative data. The results of this study revealed that There are five demotivator themes ordered from the highest-rated namely home online English learning environment content and material failure experience teacher-related factors and lack of intrinsic motivation. The most rated demotivators in home online English learning were lack of interaction with 78.9% responses followed by 66.2% for increasing assignments and 62.1% for slow internet connection. In content and material expectation to use grammatically correct English was the most demotivating with 59.6% responses. The other three demotivators gain less than 50% responses. The study also showed additional demotivators such as unsupportive parents doing house chores and Wi-fi absence. The level of students rsquo demotivation is 2.9 categorized as low level of demotivation. It means that the students were still able to conserve their willingness to learn English from home although they face new era of distance learning with its challenges. Based on the result of this study suggestions are addressed to teachers and educational institutions to keep students rsquo motivation throughout this online learning and enhance the teaching and learning process. Future studies can investigate demotivation from the perspective of students with special needs teachers and parents. Using different types of instruments can also widen this topic.
