Abstrak
Muslims around the world have been discriminated against in every social aspect in western countries such as the U.K. the U.S. European countries and Australia. They have received discrimination attitudes since the 18th century and the Gulf war. Anti-Islam or Islamophobia attitude seems to be preserved by the Westerners since the attitude still exists up to these days even in a multicultural and migrant-friendly country like Australia and New Zealand. One of the notable Islamophobia incidents is Christchurch mass shooting in 2019 which killed 51 Muslims. This study investigates the representation of Muslims in Australian online media using critical discourse analysis (CDA) proposed by Norman Fairclough. The result shows that Muslims are depicted in neutral to positive discourse in ABC News as left/center-leaning media and News.com.au as right/center-leaning media. Muslims are regarded to be forgiving and decent people.
