Abstrak
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (1968) written by Philip K. Dick is a novel whose narrative is concerned with the importance of empathy in human life. Through several studies exploring the novel s intake about how empathy is the remark of human authenticity the change of behavior in the society to be consumptive to reach empathy is overlooked. The portrayal of how consumption has taken over as self-identity and worth has impacted how society sees social status and class. Using Bourdieu s theory on capital and taste as an analytical framework we demonstrate that the novel has craftily linked consumption and taste in the structuring of the fictional society narrated in the novel. The novel particularly highlights that consumer goods and choices are then evaluated and fitted in through capital categories to determine characters status in the class system. It is eventually the characters rsquo awareness of the manipulative and rigged class-based social system that help them deconstruct the fabrication of the society. Eventually this study demonstrates the novel rsquo s strong social critique which remains relevant today.
