Death in literary works often appears to serve its function towards the plot. The goal of this study is to provide an explanation regarding the role of death in the novel. The critic performed close reading approach of the novel for the analysis and as of the corresponding theories the theory about the possibility of death used as a literary device and Martin Heidegger rsquo s explanation about death are borrowed to help the critic in analyzing this novel. The result of this study demonstrates that death in this novel has three roles one being death as a literary device and death as freedom or both whereas its usage is highly dependent on each death event that befalls several characters in One Flew over the Cuckoo rsquo s Nest.
