The effectiveness of grammarly and teacher feedback in writing classes of Indonesian Undergraduate EFL Students / Delsa Miranty

Abstrak
Nowadays English teachers should consider the importance of using Grammarly with students of various English proficiency levels. In addition to immediate and detailed feedback Grammarly also provides error notifications and correction suggestions. Focusing on Grammarly as a pedagogical tool and teacher feedback this study aims to determine the effectiveness of Grammarly and teacher feedback in writing classes of Indonesian undergraduate EFL students. The research design of this study was Switching Replication Design under the framework of an experimental design with Grammarly and teacher feedback as the feedback. Research data were collected from students of the English Education Department from a public university in Indonesia. Cluster random sampling was used in this study. The research instruments were 1) tests (pre-test and post-test) 2) questionnaire. Procedures in obtaining the data were conducted through 1) pre-test given before treatments and post-test given after treatments 2) two-time questionnaire before and after tests given. Data analysis used in this study was statistical analysis in t-test and descriptive statistics. Findings revealed that Grammarly first followed by teacher feedback enhanced the students writing skills used with argumentative writing texts for Indonesian undergraduate EFL students. Then this study s findings shed light on Grammarly s effectiveness as a feedback tool for Indonesian undergraduate EFL students has more effect on diction language use and mechanics and teacher feedback has more effect on content and organization. The next finding was their positive attitude toward feedback also reveals how much they valued Grammarly s automated feedback in this study. In conclusion Grammarly helped Indonesian undergraduate EFL students write better argumentative texts in this study and students general acceptance of automated feedback showed pedagogical potential. Also students success in incorporating Grammarly as automated feedback into their revisions shows that they used feedback effectively and that encouraging them to do so improved their writing performance. The implications are Grammarly is an instructional tool for writing teachers and students alike. This study suggests feedback from human interaction for the following research peer feedback replicated studies in diversified research contexts and in-depth quantitative studies.
