Code switching in speaking classroom conversation: a focus on lecturer-students interaction at University of Muhammadiyah Malang / Sri Wahyuni Ningsih
Abstrak
Code switching is a part of our process in learning foreign language including learning English. Code switching in English language classroom helps to deliver the material to the students better. The teacher can switch the language from English into Indonesian or another language that the students might understand in order to help them get into the material easily. Thus in this case the researcher analyzed the code switching occured in speaking classroom at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. There were 2 classes that being investigated. The focus are on the types of code switching made by the lecturers the lecturers rsquo reasons in using code switching the moments in using code switching and students rsquo perception towards the use of code switching by their speaking lecturer. The finding of this research can be concluded that there were three types of code switching that were used by the speaking lecturer in speaking class at University of Muhammadiyah Malang those were tag switching inter-sentential switching and intra-sentential switching.Therefore the lecturers used code switching to help the students easier to understand the material lessen the boredome confirm the students rsquo understanding towards the material help the students to engage with the material and makes the classroom interaction is more relax. The lecturers made code switching when he was explaining the principal of the material fulfill the blankness when he was unable to recall the English vocabulary that he was going to declare. Moreover when the students were bored during the lecturing process the lecturer used code switching to make some jokes or tease the students in order to please them. Nevertheless mostly the students prefer thei lecturer used full English rather than code switching during teaching and learning process since it can increase their English ability.
