Abstrak

Keywords Humor Pun or Paronomasia Social media graphic Pun or also known as Paronomasia is a type of word-play which exploits the different possible meanings of a word(s) or the fact that there are words which sound alike but have different meanings. Up until nowadays due to the involvement of the internet there has been one specific medium which is called social media especially Facebook that aids the production and the distribution of pun. This study aims to identify Facebook involvement in the development of pun especially the types of pun and how pun is presented in the Facebook. This research utilized a descriptive quantitative design because it deals with large sum of data. The data were obtained from Puns a fans page from one of the social media called Facebook. The data were furthermore analyzed with following stages (1) separating all the data into three categories based on the type of pun presented by Debra Aaron (2017) (2) identifying the significance of graphic total sum of reaction average of reactions/ post and both possible meaning of each individual data and (3) making the necessary data into graph. The results show there were 50 data in the form of post related to pun it is further divided into three types. In terms of frequency of post the following order is presented from the highest frequency to the lowest one accompanied by their respective average reactions/ post Phonological-semantic-syntactic type (40% 16 440 reactions/ post) Phonological-morphological-syntactic type (30% 13 086.67 reactions/ post) and Phonological-semantic type (30% 10 240 reactions/ post). Thus the mostly preferred type of pun is Phonological-semantic-syntactic type. In terms of presentation of pun in the Facebook there are 19 data that present pun using text-only 29 data that present pun using text and graphic which were divided into two parts significant role with 15 data and optional role with 14 data and 2 data that present pun in form of graphic-only. The data gathered regarding presentation of pun indicates that combination of text and graphic is mostly used to present pun in Facebook. It is finally concluded that Phonological-semantic-syntactic type of pun gain its popularity in Facebook. It becomes popular due to the lenient rule in the production of this type of pun and also this type of pun utilizes idiom and phrase to create surprise of ambiguity in which the content of humor is successfully delivered. It is also concluded that there are three ways on how pun is presented in Facebook using text-only combination of text and graphic and graphic-only. The additional way of presenting pun using graphic indicates that Facebook contributes in the development of pun in term of how it is presented. This research can be used as practical reference for first comedian to enhance and broaden the topic and content they deliver. Second it is aimed for students of literature to helps them in their study with the knowledge of crucial element of language that this thesis includes such as microlinguistics and macrolinguistics. Third this research is able to facilitate further researcher with reference about the topic of pun or paronomasia.
