Ambiguity in trevor noah’s stand up comedy show / Tri Nur Hidayati

Abstrak
Ambiguity is a word or expression that can be understood in two or more possible ways. As far as a given verbal joke is on a given rendition presented in the form of a single linear text the only way this ldquo double meaning rdquo can be achieved is through the non-uniqueness of the semantic interpretation of the text. The objective of this research are investigating on the lexical ambiguity and syntactical ambiguity conveyed in Stand Up Comedy show by Trevor Noah and to explain the possible meaning of the joke. The research design used in the study is descriptive qualitative research. This research utilized social media especially YouTube as the largest video sharing website. The data was taken from some of Noah s performances that have been displayed and re-uploaded on YouTube platform. This research includes videos from YouTube with an average time span over five minutes as data for research. Data that has been collected will arranged in separate folders and categorized depending on the type of ambiguity. This study uses qualitative textual analysis. Textual analysis involves the identification and the interpretation of a set of verbal or non-verbal signs. The findings showed that there were 10 ambiguous words or phrases in Noah s Stand Up Comedy performance entitled ldquo Zambia Loves Escalators rdquo which consisted of 2 lexical ambiguities and 8 syntactic ambiguities.
