Abstrak
Differences in cultural perspectives between individuals or groups become barriers in socializing and communicating. This conflict can lead to stereotypes experienced by the Chinese American community. The Farewell for instance is one of the movies that presents different point of view between Chinese and Americans. The movie as a medium not only inherits values and meanings but also provides an overview of each character rsquo s culture and roles. As first and second generation migrants Billi and her parents struggle to adapt to Chinese culture. This issue is a common problem for immigrants because they have dual identities. Therefore this research uses Stuart Hall s circuit of culture theory to elaborate the representation identity experienced by Billi rsquo s family in the film The Farewell. In addition this study applies culture and beliefs practiced by Chinese such as filial piety and Confucianism.
