Abstrak

The target users of this product are children who learn English for the first time. In Indonesia children usually learn English for the first time at 4th grade of elementary school or with the age span of 9 to11 years old. The method used by research is the adaptation of the Research and Development Model proposed by Borg and Gall (2003). The adaptation is done based on the needs of this research. The method used by this research consists of nine steps. They are assessing the needs to identify goal analyzing the learners and the context writing performance objectives developing assessment instruments developing instructional strategy developing instructional materials conducting formative evaluation of instruction revising the instruction conducting summative evaluation of instruction. The product of this research is in the form of Big Books. The Big Books consist of five books with its five different titles. Those books are Good Words Yes I Can Don rsquo t Cheat Let rsquo s Take Care of Our House and Put Others before You. The Language level used by this product is A1 level of CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) standard and the characters taught are based on Pedoman Penguatan Pendidikan Karakter (The Guidance of teaching character) for elementary and secondary levels issued by Ministry of Education and Culture. The values taught by this guidance are spiritual self-reliance integrity caring and nationalism. The products have been made then validated in three validation levels. Those are validation by the expert on material validation by the expert on media and field validation by 4th-grade students. The validation of material is done by distributing a questionnaire that asks two quality aspects of the products. They are content eligibility and feasibility of presentation. Next the validation on media is done by distributing a questionnaire that investigates one quality aspect that is graphical eligibility. Last the field validation is done by distributing questionnaires to 24 students of fourth grade of SDI Mohammad Hatta. The questionnaires for field validation aim to measure three aspects. They are the level of difficulty the level of attractiveness and the level of usefulness. The result of these three validation levels shows that the product is highly valid and can be used as learning media without revision. The products of this research can be used for children who learn English for the first time. Since the format is a big book it is suitable to use this product for classical setting with the guidance of a teacher or it also can be printed in a smaller size for individual learning or with the guidance of parents. Further it can be disseminated by providing these books in bookstores or by downloading these books from an online learning platform.
