Abstrak
In an English conversation speakers tend to use kinds of discourse markers unintentionally as it happens naturally. There are many kinds of discourse markers which also have various meaning and purpose. This present study discusses the use of discourse marker you know by Indonesian learners of English during their performance on spoken discourse. Since English is only used as the language of instruction instead of main language therefore this present study aimed to investigate what meaning and purpose of Indonesian learners of English using you know as the discourse marker by analyzing the spoken corpus of UM-SpEAKs (Universitas Negeri Malang Spoken English in Academic Kontexts) and unfold factors that potentially trigger the phenomenon i.e. context of conversation speakers rsquo background and gender. This present study was designed by applying descriptive quantitative method since it took into account the frequency the use of you know in each contexts of spoken discourse (classroom discussion group discussion group presentation debate). The subject of this present study was the recording of students rsquo speaking performance which obtained the data into the form of transcription. To facilitate the processing of the data researcher used two tools of research instruments i.e. Transcriber AG as the transcribing tool and AntConc as the tool for calculating and analyzing the data. Afterwards when the analyzed data obtained it continued to investigate the factors that triggered speaker to use you know as the discourse marker. The factor included context of conversation speakers rsquo background and gender. Accordingly the occurrences of you know as the discourse marker revealed various meaning and purpose i.e. as the marker of information marker of sharing knowledge disfluency or hesitation marker marker which separate the constituents that were ordinarily in adjoining transition marker repetition vagueness and some were categorized as ambiguous meanings. Furthermore it was found that from the three factor mentioned before eventually the context of conversation and speakers rsquo background were most likely factors that influenced the use of you know as the discourse marker. Meanwhile factor of gender might determine its use but did not predominantly influence the occurrence and role of you know. Since there is hindrance during the data processing henceforth this present study suggests next researcher to use more efficient research instrument(s) in conducting research that requires a transcription process of certain data. Also this present study can be used as a comparison for future research which focus on aspect of discourse marker matters.
