Developing prototyped character-building storybooks as supplementary reading materials for the fourth graders of elementary school / Hany Noviya

Abstrak
Character education plays a vital role in young learners rsquo education process. Students do not just need to improve academic skills but also build good characters. This is in line with the need analysis results that reveal that it is important to integrate character education aspects in teaching English since students can learn the English language and the moral value at the same time. However English teachers found difficulties in teaching character education aspects due to the time constraints and lack of materials and media. Moreover the need analysis also reveals the limited availability of English storybooks in school libraries and bookstores. Departing from the needs mentioned above the current study aims to develop prototyped character-building storybooks as supplementary reading materials for young learners especially for fourth graders in the bilingual school. The stories are related to particular character-building aspects including hard work creativity and honesty. The product used the Research and Development (R amp D) according to Borg and Gall (2003) which focused on developing and validating any educational products or other media in teaching and learning activities. There were seven steps in developing character-building storybooks namely (1) research and collecting information or need analysis (2) planning (3) development of the product (4) theoretical validation (5) empirical validation (6) revision (7) evaluation. The result of the validation for content and illustration as well as the result of the try-out presented several strengths and weaknesses of the storybooks. The first strength was that the text type topics and stories plot were suitable and understandable for the fourth graders. The second strength was that illustrations stimulated and promoted children rsquo s interest in books. The illustrations also helped students understand the content of the story. The last strength was that the storybooks were completed with ten questions related to students rsquo emotions. Meanwhile the weakness of the storybook was that it needed to be completed with a glossary. Therefore the storybooks were revised based on the data obtained from the expert validations and try-out. Lastly teachers are recommended to use the storybooks developed in the current study as supplementary reading materials. The storybooks have been completed with interesting illustrations and appropriate language and vocabulary that can motivate students in learning English. Reading storybooks can also be a stepping-stone to teaching character education for elementary school students. It is also recommended that future researchers may conduct similar research with a larger scope of target readers for instance developing storybooks for students from regular or other public schools.
