Dual filial piety model reflected in the main characters of kevin kwan\'s crazy rich asians / Muhammad Sofiyul Fuadi
Abstrak
This literary criticism questions how the dual filial piety model (DFPM) is depicted in Kevin Kwan rsquo s Crazy Rich Asians through the relationships of Rachel with her mother and Nick with the elders in his family. DFPM is a filial concept that portrays a parent-child relationship based on vertical (Authoritarian Filial Piety AFP) and horizontal (Reciprocal Filial Piety RFP) interaction. To test the validity of the model that Rachel and Nick are captured in a study using specific personality traits attitudes and behaviour from Yeh and Bedford (2003) is applied. This study concludes that Rachel subscribes to the RFP while Nick adopts AFP. A mutual relationship between two individuals is evident in the relationship of Rachel with her mother. Rachel rsquo s characterization is significantly described with Extraversion Egalitarianism and Open-mindedness Perspective Taking and Openness to Experience. Meanwhile a vertical relationship between different family roles is reflected on Nick and the elders who demand him to never disobey their authority and cause him to gradually develop Neuroticism. Discreetness with Others and Valuing Harmony are positively carried by Nick in order to maintain positive emotions. A surprising finding is likely to appear considering that Nick takes a conflict resolution strategy in order to overcome his family issue.
