The integration of critical thinking activities and ict to improve students’ reading comprehension skill / Adani Shabrina

Abstrak
Based on the results of preliminary study conducted at State Senior High School (SMAN) 10 Malang it was found that the eleventh grade students of social science 2 had problems in reading comprehension skill indicated by the low scores of reading comprehension test and lack of students participation in the teaching and learning process. In addition based on the class observation result the students rsquo reading comprehension skill was considered the lowest compared to the other 3 English skills since students rsquo motivation to learn reading in class was low so they needed more exposure in developing their reading habit as well as improve their reading comprehension skill. Therefore the classroom action research was conducted to overcome the students rsquo problems. Dealing with the objective of this study critical thinking activities were integrated and ICT was used in the classroom to help students improving their reading comprehension skill and participation. The implementation was conducted in two cycles consisting of 8 meetings. The data were obtained from field note observation checklist reading comprehension test and questionnaire. The findings of the study indicated that the integration of critical thinking activities and the use of ICT succeeded in improving students rsquo reading comprehension skill and participation. The findings could achieve the criteria of success (1) All of the students achieved the standard passing score of 78 and (2) 75% of students participated actively in the teaching learning activities. In cycle 1 the results of students rsquo reading comprehension test showed that only 61 1% students achieved the standard passing score whereas the other 38 9% students had not achieved the standard passing score. Moreover the students rsquo participation was 72 2%. Based on the results in cycle 1 students rsquo reading achievement and the students rsquo participation had not meet the criteria of success. Thus this study conducted the cycle 2. The results of cycle two showed good results and already met the criteria of success since the results of students rsquo reading comprehension test showed that 100% students had achieved the standard passing score and students rsquo participation had reached 82 4%. Regarding to the findings it could be concluded that the integration of critical thinking activities and ICT is effective to improve students rsquo reading comprehension skill and students rsquo participation in the teaching and learning of reading. Therefore English teachers are suggested to implement this strategy and use ICT in the teaching and learning of reading. Finally the future researchers are recommended to conduct researches related to critical thinking activities and ICT for different subjects and focuses.
