Types of hedging employed in the discussion chapter of undergraduate theses written by students of english language teaching program of State University of Malang / Yovi Yudoyudanto
Abstrak
This study is conducted to find out how frequent undergraduate students of English Language Teaching program employ hedging devices in their undergraduate theses. This study also tries to find out the commonly used hedging devices in the undergraduate theses. A concordance program named AntConc is used as the instrument to help finding the hedging devices contained within the six classifications proposed by Brooke (2016) assertive pronoun lexical verb modal adjective modal adverb modal noun and modal verb. This study implemented the mixing of quantitative and qualitative method. The quantitative method is used to find out the frequency of the hedging devices and to help pinpoint the commonly used hedging devices in the corpora. The qualitative method is used to aid in portraying any understanding or insight behind the frequency of hedging devices found in the study. The result of the study showed that modal adjective was the commonly used hedging devices classification throughout the 24 undergraduate theses compiling 40.81% of the entire hedging devices found. The hedging device ldquo about rdquo was the commonly used hedging device of the modal adjective classification compiling 163 (24.96%) of the entire 653 entries of the classification. The result also shows that about 24 hedging devices are found per 1 000 words with a total word count of 66 174 words. Future research on other aspects of hedging devices may be conducted to provide better insight on the use of hedging by EFL learners especially students of the English Department of Universitas Negeri Malang both ELT and ELL students. Further studies on hedging devices could also provide an understanding on the importance of hedging devices in academic writing.
