A deconstructive analysis of the iron man and captain america characterization in avengers: endgame / Markus Rosolino Hendra
Abstrak
The Avengers Endgame released in 2019 is the anticlimax of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which is a universe of a sequence of superhero films. The Avengers are a team of superheroes that work together using the ability of each member to become more powerful than the serious threats that they usually face. In this study I am going to analyze the characterization of Iron Man and Captain America. These characters are interesting for study because they both get the most screen time in the movie as well as many critics from the audiences. Tony Stark or Iron Man is popularly known as a selfish hero while Steve Rogers or Captain America is the selfless one. In an interview with the New York Times the scriptwriters of the film said that they wanted to make a character development of both of them by sacrificing Iron Man and giving life to Captain America (Itzkoff 2019). In this study I am going to deconstruct the characterization of both Tony Stark or Iron Man and Steve Rogers or Captain America. The findings in the study offers another perspective in seeing in the characterization of these characters. Iron Man is actually still being selfish in this movie by keeping the family he built over the five years while the many people suffer because of losing their family. Meanwhile Captain America is still a selfless character by giving up the chance to rekindle his relationship with his girlfriend when collecting the six infinity stones and choosing to continue the battle with the team.
