The use of discourse particles of singlish in online gaming interaction practices / Julian Tri Hustanto
Abstrak
The latest development of the English language has formed a new language variant resulting from contact-language phenomena such as Singlish. This research examines the use of Singaporean English (Singlish) discourse particles in online gaming. The qualitative descriptive method is applied in this research to investigate the meaning-making practices of the gamers through the use of discourse particles in the games. The data gathered from the screenshots taken from Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) Laplace M and one of the social media platforms gamers use Discord. The finding showed kinds of the discourse particles of Singlish used during interaction and their pattern of use. The results indicated that the discourse particle of Singlish can represent the speaker rsquo s mood and attitude. The discourse particle of Singlish which is mostly used in conversation are lah leh and lor. Each particle has its function that include to emphasize strengthen and persuade the utterance and can be used as softening effect to avoid hurtful interpretation and express obviousness. Regarding the pattern of use these discourse particles mostly occur at the final position in a sentence or an utterance.
