Young Goodman Brown\'s Personality Disorder: an analysis of the main character\'s personality development / Muchammad Rijaluddin Nuralam

Abstrak
A way of thinking feeling and behaving is the component of personality. If an individual rsquo s personality deviates from the culture rsquo s expectations and causes distress that lasts over time this deviation signifies a personality disorder. This study aims to find what personality disorder is being portayed in the main character of ldquo Young Goodman Brown rdquo and how the disorder develops within his personality. Using a qualitative descriptive method this study explains how the disorder develops in Goodman Brown rsquo s personality. The data source is from the short story ldquo Young Goodman Brown rdquo by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The data collecting process is followed by Erikson rsquo s personality development theory and diagnostic criteria of personality disorder from DSM-5. The result of the study reveals that Goodman Brown has paranoid and schizoid personality disorder. Goodman Brown rsquo s personality change after his dream journey because what he knew and expected runs contrary to what he saw during the journey. Then he grows unhealthy treats such as distrust suspicion social withdrawal and affective flattening which affect his remaining lifetime. These unhealthy treats interrupt his personality development and can be seen as paranoid and schizoid personality disorder symptoms. Therefore a personality disorder is the most important issue to discuss. Due to the emersion sequence of those two personality disorders it is concluded that Brown rsquo s paranoid personality disorder is more dominant than his schizoid personality disorder. It also results from the failure to overcome his identity crisis leading to the tendency of isolation stagnation and despair. Finally English literary students are suggested to elaborate on the history of Puritanism or any other ideology and its psychological impact on its possessor or surroundings within literary works to increase awareness towards this matter.
