Critical reading strategies applied by High Self-Efficacious readers in Undergraduate program / Roviqur Riziqien Alfa

It is pivotal to read a text critically due to the demand of the era. Moreover having reading self-efficacy can assist students to attain comprehension in reading. Therefore this study is intended to investigate critical reading strategies employed by undergraduate students in term of self-efficacy. The present study employed mixed methods which chose sequential explanatory design. The subjects of this study were nineteen undergraduate students of Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University of Malang who were in sixth semester. Reading comprehension test and reading self-efficacy questionnaire as well as concurrent think aloud and interview were used to collect the data. In the preliminary study the quantitative phase was carried out to sixth semester undergraduate students by giving them reading self-efficacy questionnaire and reading comprehension test. During completing the test the students were asked to perform concurrent think aloud. This phase classified the subjects of the study into two groups fair group with high self-efficacy and poor group with high self-efficacy. Afterwards to follow up the result of quantitative findings in preliminary study the researcher conducted main study which elaborate the types of critical reading strategies and compared the critical reading strategies employed by the two groups. In addition the interview was carried out to the representative from both groups. The study revealed that the quantitave data from reading comprehension test classified 19 students into the group of fair and poor readers six students of fair readers and 13 students of poor readers and reading self-efficacy questionnaire showed that 18 stundents were high and one students was low in self-efficacy. So the students were classified into a group of fair readers and a group of poor readers with high self-efficacy. Based on concurrent think aloud and interview data both groups had implemented critical reading strategies during completing the test. The students employed the strategy of previewing contextualizing questioning reflecting evaluating the text and contrasting as well as comparing the related readings. However a group of fair readers with high self-efficacy applied more various critical reading strategies than a group of poor readers with high self-efficacy. A group of poor readers did not utilize the strategies of reflecting evaluating the text and contrasting as well as comparing the related readings. Furthermore questioning strategy was the most frequent critical reading strategy used by a group of fair readers. They frequently used finding supporting details connecting important information finding out the structure and questioning the information presented in the text through personal knowledge and experience. Meanwhile the most frequent critical reading strategies applied by a group of poor readers was previewing. They understood the text by reading the questions skimming the text marking unfamiliar vocabulary marking complicated sentences predicting the text structure through conjunctions found and reading the title of the text.
