Exploring thesis writing anxiety among undergraduate students of english department at Universitas Negeri Malang / Aulia Asma Rabbani

Abstrak
Writing a thesis is compulsory for most final year students at Indonesian universities. In writing the thesis students often face difficulties and as a result they feel anxious. The purpose of this research is to investigate causes of thesis writing anxiety including its level dominant type and factors. The subjects of this study were 70 final year students of the English Department Universitas Negeri Malang. The data collection was done by employing two questionnaires adapted from Second Language Writing Anxiety (SLWAI) by Cheng (2004) and Causes of Writing Anxiety Inventory (CWAI) by Rezaei and Jafari (2014). The study indicated 59% of the students had a moderate level of thesis writing anxiety 30% experienced a high level of thesis writing anxiety and 11% experienced a low level of thesis writing anxiety. Among the three types of writing anxiety the dominant type found in this research was cognitive anxiety with the highest mean of 24.8. Then four primary causes of thesis writing anxiety were difficulties in meeting with the supervisors pressures from the parents to graduate soon linguistic difficulties and lack of motivation to write the thesis.
