The gain and loss in the adaptation of the boy in the striped pyjamas / Intan Ratri Pramesthi

Abstrak
This article offers a comparative perspective of the plot and characterization of the novel and film version of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (hence abbreviated as BSP). The novel written by John Boyne (2006) was adapted to a film with the same title directed by Mark Herman (2008). BSP rsquo s narrative revolves around Jews lives in Nazi s concentration camps the narrative is told from the perspective of an eight-year-old boy the son of a Nazi s commander. Many scholars and critics tend to discuss the historical accuracies of the novel and the film version literature s representation of the Holocaust and the psychological issues of characters. Yet scholars and critics tend to overlook the film adaptation whose plotline and characterization differ from the novel version. This study focuses on the discrepancies in the narrative of the novel and the film. The theories used are Eneste rsquo s (1991) ecranisation and Stanton s (1965) structural theory. This article demonstrates that there are things lost and gained between the two media. We discovered that numerous events in the novel rsquo s plot and characterization of BSP are removed modified and added to the film adaptation. Several factors can influence the changes including the changing medium creative license and technical limitations.
