Representation of existentialist feminism in 20th century women / Zadza Rosyada Hadfina Aprilia

Abstrak
A film directed by Mike Mills (2016) 20th Century Women presents the story of a single mother (Dorothea) who raises her son (Jamie) and she finds it difficult to understand her son rsquo s behavior because of the age gap and the different historical conditions. Therefore Dorothea asks for a suggestion from Jamie rsquo s best friend named Julie and a woman who rents a room at her house named Abbie on how to raise Jamie. This study aims to find out the manifestation of women rsquo s marginalization as other and their resistance in 20th Century Women by applying Simone de Beauvoir rsquo s (1988) existentialist feminist theory. The study focuses on female characters Dorothea Fields Abbie Porter and Julie Hamlin. The study demonstrates that the film reflects Beauvoir rsquo s idea on women rsquo s existence every woman must be able to live freely to determine her future independently without coercion from others. Dorothea and Abbie fight for their freedom and reject their otherness. They do not choose to be the mystic the prostitute and the narcissist. They are able to let get rid of all the burdens that hinder their progress towards an authentic self. Unlike the previous characters however Julie still normalizes herself as an object and she is not against toxic masculinity. She could not get out of the situation and kept going with the flow.
