The correlation between instagram usage and students\' vocabulary mastery / Silvi Ester Damanik

Abstrak
This research aimed to find out if there was any correlation between Instagram Usage and Students rsquo Vocabulary Mastery. In this quantitative research the method used was a correlational research design. The participants of the study were 129 students of English Language Education major from the cohorts 2018 2019 and 2020 of Universitas Negeri Malang. This study used two instruments to collect the data namely a questionnaire to collect the data from Instagram usage and a vocabulary size test to measure students rsquo vocabulary mastery. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient in SPSS 20 software was used to calculate and analyze the correlation between the two variables. The findings showed that both Instagram Usage and Students rsquo Vocabulary Mastery had no correlation. The r value obtained was -0.127 which was far from 0.5 and it was interpreted as no correlation. It means that Instagram usage does not significantly contribute to students rsquo vocabulary mastery. Thus the null hypothesis (Ho) was accepted and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was rejected. Besides the researcher suggests that future researchers filter the respondent of the study and choose specific English content on Instagram as a topic. Lastly they may conduct other research designs such as experimental designs because different results might appear. In addition for teachers or university lecturers the researcher suggests utilizing other mobile learning that can be used as a learning medium to develop students rsquo English vocabulary.
