Vocational High School Students’ Competence Competition (LKS-SMK): students’ awareness, motivation, and recommendations / Mohammad Ridwan Naufal Ariq

Abstrak
Students rsquo Competence Competition (known as Lomba Kompetensi Siswa Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan/LKS-SMK) is a prestigious competition held annually by the ministry of education to improve vocational high school students rsquo competency. This competition is a good source of motivation to develop students skills in English and vocational competencies. However limited study has been conducted to capture the competition from students rsquo point of view. Most previous studies portrayed the competition from participant and winners rsquo perspectives. Therefore this study is intended to understand how are the students aware of this competition how motivated they are to join this competition and what are their recommendations about this competition. This research employed a survey to discover SMK students rsquo awareness of the LKS-SMK competition including the use of English within the competition how the competition motivates the students to join and recommendation from the students for the competition. The findings indicated that almost all students are aware that this competition is a good place to present and develop their vocational skills outside the school. This competition also became a source of both motivation and demotivation. However they also felt anxious about the competition due to the requirement to speak English and master a set of vocational competencies. Overall students perceived that this competition is good for their academic competence and character building. The recommendations from this research are that schools should be concerning what the students need to be confident enough to join this competition.
