Raymond carver’s cathedral: robert as a symbol of human normalcy and potency / Indah Riswantini
Abstrak
Cathedral is a short story written by the famous American literary writer Raymond Carver. Cathedral tells the story of three people the narrator namely Bub Bub s wife and Robert. This study aims to find the meaning of Robert s character which focuses on the monologues and dialogues between Bub Bub rsquo s wife and Robert. Robert s character a blind man has an important role in the story that may symbolize something beyond. A structural-semiotics approach is applied to help interpret the meaning of Robert s character. The structural approach is used to understand Robert s role in the structure of Cathedral. The analysis of meaning is done by applied semiotics which determines the signified and the signifier of the evidence. As a result of these findings it was found that Robert s lack of vision does not reduce any sense of a normal human and Robert rsquo s character symbolizes human normalcy and potency. In addition Robert s character with his physical abnormality has the ability to awaken and give the narrator and readers a new awareness of new sight.
