Semiotic approach on bts\' butter music video / Shinta Devy Oktaviani Atrisna
Abstrak
This paper analyzes one of BTS rsquo recent music videos ldquo Butter rdquo using a semiotic approach. BTS short for Bangtan Seonyeondan is a 7-member South Korean boy group debuting in 2013 and is currently raising to prominence as a global pop phenomenon. As BTS is considered the first K-Pop group to cross cultural boundaries and significantly influence the United States indicated by a number of international and local awards as well as high song charts they are still vulnerable to harsh criticism and hateful comments from the Western audience. With the release of the music video ldquo Butter rdquo issues arise to topple down the song rsquo s and eventually the group rsquo s popularity. This paper wants to observe and analyze the scenes in the music video as it is observed that they serve representations of how difficult it is to penetrate into the Western music industry without immersing themselves in the culture itself such as by wearing Western-associated suits and singing songs with all-English lyrics. Despite the efforts many criticize that the music video promotes xenophobia and unrealistic ldquo fantasies rdquo . Therefore this semiotic analysis serves as a different viewpoint of Butter rsquo s music video by relating the denotative and connotative meanings of the scenes with several surrounding discourses related with the making of the music video or the aftermath of the release.
