Problems on the implementation of remedial teaching programs for low-achievers / Ittaqi Fayuzi Meiladiaty

Abstrak
In Indonesian schools classrooms are generally filled with students from various backgrounds that makes it difficult for the teacher to facilitate all the students rsquo needs in learning. The difficulty of teachers become bigger when blended learning was implemented and it negatively affected students learning process. These resulted in students rsquo having low-achievement. Hence a remedial teaching program was implemented to accommodate the low-achieving students. This study was set out to investigate remedial teaching programs from the English teachers rsquo viewpoint and to reveal the problems encountered by the English teachers in conducting it. The method used was case study and the approach was descriptive qualitative. The subjects were three English teachers from SMP Negeri 13 Malang with observation questionnaire and in-depth interview as the data collection procedures. The study found that the low-achievers were caused by several factors such as teacher problems student problems and technical problems. Although remedial teaching programs result in better achievement for low-achievers the teachers still face difficulties in designing and conducting the remedial teaching due to several reasons such as time limitations different students rsquo learning strategies and difficulties arranging online meetings. However remedial teaching is categorized as effective and important to facilitate low-achievers because if the teachers do not conduct remedial teaching it will be more low-achievers in their class.
