English teacher’s teaching strategies to support students’ vocabulary enrichment: a case study / Maghfira Febri Ayu Cahyani

Abstrak
This research investigated the teacher rsquo s experiences and teaching strategies supporting students rsquo vocabulary enrichment. A case study research design with a qualitative approach was used. It involved one seventh-grade English teacher in a Junior High School in Malang as the research subject. In collecting the data observation and interview were used. The instrument was based on theories of Intaraprasert (2004) with modification. The result of this research showed that the teacher employed seven strategies (1) guess the meaning of difficult words (2) memorize words (3) find the synonym and antoynm of unfamiliar words (4) write down the unfamiliar words (5) comprehend vocabulary in integrated skills mdash speaking and writing (6) learn by visual teaching aids and (7) correct students rsquo mistakes. Based on the research findings suggestions are addressed to English teachers to use various strategies to the students in teaching vocabulary so that the students are motivated and interested in learning English. It is also recommended that teachers can use ice-breaking activities by using games use some visual aids and explore any kind of quiz to motivate them to enrich their vocabulary. In conclusion teaching vocabulary can use many strategies to make students develop their English skill.
