African-American vernacular English as hip-hop artist identity in Indonesian rapper Ramengvrl\'s songs / Aulani Fajriyah Priambarini
Abstrak
This study aims at investigating and identifying the grammatical features of African American Vernacular English used in the song lyrics in the Indonesian Rapper Ramengvrl rsquo s Can rsquo t Speak English album and understand the underlying reasons for this AAVE use by applying the sociolinguistics approach. The data context of this study was song lyrics contained in the album which were in the form of clauses phrases and sentences. The discussion and elaboration within the article are using the descriptive-qualitative method. The data was analyzed using Wolfram rsquo s theory of classification of grammatical features of American Vernacular English (AAVE) to analyze the features of AAVE in Ramengvrl rsquo s songs (Wolfram 2004 Wolfram 2020) and Nguyen and Ferguson rsquo s (2019) Reyes rsquo (2005) Cutler rsquo s (2015) and Fascina rsquo s (2017) works to elaborate the underlying purpose of the use of it. The data analyzed were qualitatively collected by closely and thoroughly listening to the songs and reading the transcribed lyrics.
