The analysis of the plot and setting roles in ang lee\'s life of pi / Indita Rahmanda
Abstrak
Life of Pi a film directed by Ang Lee tells the life story of Pi a boy who has a journey in the middle of an ocean with a Bengal tiger. In his journey Pi finds a phenomenon and occasions that can change his perspective on understanding the surroundings. The success of this film is questioned by the critics. For example how the technical production uses a combination of CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) and visual effects in some sets. Life of Pi serves a storyline by highlighting its cinematography and mise-en-scene in the majority of scenes. In this case it deals with the film elements which are narrative (plot) and setting (place atmosphere and time). Therefore this study uses a formalist perspective to point out how essential those intrinsic elements build an artwork particularly how some settings informatively contribute to the film narrative. The plot will be identified with a basic three-act structure concept. Followed by borrowing Petrie and Boggs rsquo theory of Setting and Its Effect the significance of the setting which influences the plot line in Life of Pi will be explained.
