The use of picture-based strategy to improve the tenth graders’ speaking skills at SMAN 1 Tegaldlimo / Afrida Sheila Ayuningtyas

Abstrak
This research was designed to enhance the students rsquo speaking skills. Based on the preliminary observations some problems were found on the students rsquo speaking skills of grade MIA-3 SMAN 1 Tegaldlimo. The students seemed to have difficulty speaking English because they were confused about the grammar and had no idea to speak. Therefore the researcher implemented the picture-based strategy to improve the students rsquo speaking skills. This research was carried out using Classroom Action Research (CAR). It was conducted by following action research procedures namely planning implementing observing and reflecting. It was done in two cycles. Each cycle included three meetings. Research data were collected through the following instruments interviews observation checklists students speaking tests and questionnaires. This research included 33 students of X-MIA3 as the participants. The picture-based strategy was implemented through some steps prepared some pictures related to the materials asked the students to examine the pictures accuracy discussed the picture together asked the students to work in groups (make descriptive texts based on the pictures) do the presentation in groups and individually. The findings revealed that using picture-based strategy can help students improve their speaking skills. The improvement can be seen from the students rsquo speaking performance and their participation toward the implementation of the strategy. To sum up the picture-based strategy is a suitable strategy in improving the tenth graders rsquo speaking skills.
