Portrayal of jo’s authorship in the 1933 and the 2019 little women films / Nindyasari Nastiti

Nastiti, Nindyasari - Nama Orang;

Abstrak
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is a renowned 1868 American novel. It follows the story of the March sisters namely Meg Jo Beth and Amy. Its durable themes of sisterhood and family make the novel continuously adapted in films. One topic in the story that still resonates today is creative ambition specifically Jo rsquo s authorship. Just like Jo women nowadays still face limitations in fulfilling their creative ambition. However Jo rsquo s authorship is not always explored in every Little Women film. Hence this article offers an analysis of Jo rsquo s authorship portrayed in Little Women film and the cultural backgrounds behind the portrayal. To see if a certain cultural background does influence how Jo rsquo s authorship is treated in a film the 1933 and the 2019 Little Women films were compared. The aims of this article are to (1) describe the differences between the 1933 and the 2019 films of Little Women in portraying Jo rsquo s authorship and (2) describe the cultural backgrounds that motivate Jo rsquo s authorship to be portrayed differently in both films. Using a cultural study approach this study employed a feminist perspective as well as authorship theory in analyzing the films. The findings reveal that Jo rsquo s authorship is diminished in the 1933 version because of the Great Depression non-progressive feminism and the Hollywood happy ending narrative of romance films which led to the minimum exploration of the topic. Meanwhile in the 2019 version Jo rsquo s authorship is profoundly explored because it was made when women rsquo s empowerment is at its peak and an issue of women s creative ownership is on the rise allowing filmmakers to focus on feminist topics in the story.
