Students’ reading habits and the underlying factors affecting their habits / Addiena Amru Rizky

Abstrak
Reading habits are important to support students in learning English. Encouraging students to read in any languages is beneficial to support their English learning since they can improve their literacy and develop prior knowledge. During reading students may have diverse perceptions of their reading habits and factors affecting their reading habits. This study aimed to find out the 10th graders rsquo perceptions of reading activity in general their reading habits and the underlying factors. It was conducted at SMA Nasional Malang involving 100 students out of 118 students as the respondents for the questionnaire and 12 students as the interviewees. The instruments used to collect the data were a questionnaire and an interview guide. The results of the questionnaire were tabulated and showed in the form of frequency distribution and percentages. The results of the interview sessions were added with the description of the questionnaire results to gain deeper understanding of the students rsquo answers. The results of the data analysis showed that the 10th graders of SMA Nasional Malang showed positive responses towards reading activity in general. They also perceived their own reading habits positively. The factors that they perceived to affect their reading habits from the most to the least selected were technological development access to gadget self-interest or mood school library condition peer environment and family environment.
