The misunderstanding of watership down as a children’s literary work / Dafi Haqqal Thariqy

Abstrak
Literature is a description of human life conveyed through literary texts by authors. Knowing how to comprehend literature means being capable of understanding the texts that expose the author s creative process.. This article focuses on discussing Watership down written by Adam (1973). There are few debates by several critics over the compatibility of Watership down as a children rsquo s literary work Some critics (Blishen in Webb 1973 Sell 1981 Rothen 1987) give credit to the novel and consider it as a novel suitable for children. However some (Cliff 2019 Antrim 2018) do not agree with them. By using formalist rsquo s approach I present the result of my analysis showing the reasons why I supports the latter rsquo s idea. Formalism is one approach to identify what and why the motor of the story works in literary texts. This is the uniqueness of my study. The analysis is also based on Russell (2009) Lynch-Brown and Tomlison rsquo s (2005) theory stating that children literary work has certain features the value the range of age plot story and theme. After conducting thorough analysis I find out the Watership down (Admas 1972) does not meet those characteristics of children rsquo s literature. I confirm therefore that the book is not suitable as children rsquo s literary work.
