Distorted meaning in the Indonesian translation of the MBTI questionnaire as seen from google translate back-translation / Neyla Rosa Istaufi Syah

Abstrak
Machine translation or MT is one of the sub-studies of computational linguistics. The purpose of MT is to investigate and develop the use of software in translating a text or speech from one language to another. Google Translate an MT which has existed for sixteen years with more than 500 million users still has its limitation in back-translating a translated text to the original language of the source text. This study investigates types of meaning distortion contained in the Indonesian translation of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator questionnaire (MBTI) as seen from Google Translate rsquo s English back-translation compared to the original English version of the MBTI questionnaire. The descriptive quantitative method was applied in this research to analyze the numerical data and Tyupa rsquo s translation method was also used to identify the types of meaning distortions contained in the data source. The findings of this study show that two types of meaning distortion were found in the data source. Those two types are pronoun distortion and vocabulary distortion.
