Female scientist screams against stereotypes and discrimination in Adam Mckay\'s apocalyptic comedy don\'t look up / Zulfiana Mustika Sari

Abstrak
Mass media is one of the primary means of communication and entertainment including its capability to construct gender stereotypes and discrimination. Stereotypes and discrimination are mainly represented through films one of which is Don rsquo t Look Up. Thus this research aims to find out the representation of stereotypes and discrimination in the movie Don rsquo t Look Up then explores how the character reacts to it and how it affects her career as a scientist. The researcher focuses on the portrayal of roles and feminine traits and behaviors and analyzes how prejudiced thoughts and actions are directed against the female character. This research uses a qualitative descriptive analysis and the data is derived from the script dialogues and interactions between characters in the movie. The finding of this research showed that there are stereotypical judgments and several forms of discrimination portrayed in the movie. The researcher also found that the female character responds to stereotypes and discrimination through her verbal confrontation withdrawal and resigned acceptance. Overall the research provides evidence of the relationship between stereotypes and discrimination implying that stereotypes and discrimination affect the job rsquo s credibility of the female character as a scientist.
